The Sapporo Children’s Puppet Theater “Kogumaza” holds the distinction of being Japan’s first public puppet theater, established in Nakajima Park in July 1976. The inspiration for this unique theater came during a visit by the Mayor of Sapporo to its sister city, Munich, where he was touched by the joy and wonder in the eyes of children watching a puppet show. This led to the creation of a space dedicated to puppetry in Sapporo. Since its inception, “Kogumaza” has hosted a variety of performances including puppet shows, storytelling, and ventriloquism, becoming a cherished part of the local community. Their intimate 90-seat theater aims to enrich children’s spirits, bringing smiles, laughter, excitement, and sometimes even tears through the magical world of puppetry. They hope to see your bright and happy faces here, growing in spirit and health.
