Historic Temple at “Shineiji”

Naritasan Shineiji Temple is the Sapporo branch of the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple located in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture. The temple was established during the Meiji era. Following the formation of the Hokkaido Development Commission in 1869, numerous individuals from Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu moved to Hokkaido to cultivate new lands. Historical records indicate the immense challenges faced due to Hokkaido’s harsh natural conditions, leading to unspeakable hardships. Amidst these difficulties, those who sought solace in their faith in Fudo-sama laid the foundations of the temple. In 1885, a provisional hall was set up on the current location, and the principal deity, Fudo-myo-o, was enshrined, having been invited as a spiritual counterpart from Daihonzan. The temple was officially named Naritasan Sapporo Betsuin Shineiji in 1889. The Kajido was constructed in 1891. In 1909, under the guidance of master carpenter Kikuzo Hanawa from Kesennuma-gun, Iwate Prefecture, the original main hall was constructed, only to be destroyed by arson in 1964. Following its reconstruction in 1974, a traditional style main hall was erected in 2003 to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the temple’s establishment.
